Which Friday is the food truck night again?
If you've asked a neighbor that question this summer, you're not alone, and you're not wrong to be confused. Davison doesn't run one Friday-night tradition. It runs two, on two different clocks, managed by two different organizations that don't coordinate with each other. One lives downtown. One lives at the lake. And as of this week, one of them is running out of Fridays for the year.
Two organizations, two calendars
The Davison Downtown Development Authority runs the Downtown Market, a single recurring event on the second Friday of the month, but only in August, September, and October, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. It's vendors, food, and a few hours of Main Street traffic that isn't cars. This year that landed on August 14, and it lands next on September 11.
A couple of miles away, Davison Township Parks and Recreation runs its own Friday tradition at Lake Callis Recreation Complex: Movies at the Beach, most Friday nights through the summer season. On the third Friday of the month, that gets an upgrade, food trucks and live music before the movie starts. This year's third Friday was August 21.
Notice what just happened. The Downtown Market's big Friday and the lake's big Friday aren't the same week. They're not even close. One town, two "special Friday" traditions, staggered a week apart at opposite ends of Davison. If you've ever driven downtown expecting food trucks and found a quiet Main Street instead, or shown up at Lake Callis on a market Friday wondering where everyone went, this is why.
The lake's Fridays are about to disappear for the season
Here's the part that matters if you're reading this the week it's published. Lake Callis's splash pad and its pavilion rentals run on a fixed seasonal window: Memorial Day to Labor Day. Labor Day this year falls on September 7. That means the beach-season version of Friday night, the movies, the splash pad, the whole set-up, has two Fridays left: August 28 and September 4. Neither is a third Friday, so don't expect food trucks. Just the movie, the beach, and whatever's left of summer.
After Labor Day, that side of town goes quiet for the winter. The Downtown Market doesn't. Its calendar runs through October, meaning the DDA's Friday keeps going for a month and a half after the township's Friday has already wrapped for the year. So the shape of "Friday night in Davison" is about to change, not because anyone announced it, but because two separate seasonal calendars are built to end at different times, and late August is the last stretch where you can still choose between them.
You can walk between them, if you know the route
Most people treat downtown and the lake as a driving decision: pick one, get in the car. There's a free alternative that a fair number of residents don't use because nobody tells them about it.
Jack N. Abernathy Regional Park sits in the city, has miles of paved trail, and costs nothing to use. Its trail network connects directly into the downtown area, and it also runs right up against Lake Callis next door. That means you can start at Main Street, walk the Abernathy trail, and end up at the lake's edge without ever getting in a car, and without paying anything until you actually want to use the beach or splash pad. For a town that splits its Friday nights across two ends of itself, that's a genuinely useful piece of infrastructure, and it's one most "things to do in Davison" content never mentions because it requires knowing both places well enough to notice they're connected.
Abernathy itself is worth a stop on its own terms. Baseball and softball fields, soccer fields, a playscape, pavilions, and that paved trail loop that a lot of residents use for an evening walk regardless of what's happening at either calendar's Friday event.
The farmers market isn't on either calendar, and it's not quite what people expect
Separate from the DDA's once-a-month Downtown Market, Davison also has a year-round farmers market at the corner of Irish Road and Court Street, open Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with more than 70 vendors under one roof and around it. It's open every week, all year, which already puts it outside the Friday-night conversation entirely.
Here's the part longtime shoppers have started to comment on: it's drifted. Reviewers who've been going for years note that the produce stalls that used to define the place have thinned out, replaced by more boutique and craft vendors. Others still find a solid meat counter, a cheese stand, baked goods, and enough produce to make the trip worth it, especially in-season. Both things are apparently true at once, it depends on the week and the season. If you're headed there specifically to fill a produce basket, it's worth knowing this isn't the produce-heavy market it once was, even if the vendor count is as high as ever. On some summer evenings the market also brings in live music outdoors, which is its own small addition to a week that already has two other events competing for your Friday.
What this actually means for the next two weeks
If you like the lake version of Friday, this weekend (August 28) and the following one (September 4) are what's left before Labor Day closes the splash pad and pavilion rentals for the year. After that, the movie screen comes down until next summer.
If you're more of a downtown person, the next Downtown Market is September 11, and the season keeps running into October, so there's no urgency there. You've got more of that calendar left than you have of the lake's.
And if you've never used the Abernathy trail to get between the two, this is a reasonable week to try it. Walk from downtown, take the paved trail, end up at Lake Callis for one of the last movie nights of the season, and skip the second parking lot entirely.
None of this is a reason to move here or a pitch about home values. It's just how the town actually runs once you've lived here long enough to notice that Friday means something different depending on which week it is. That kind of detail is easy to miss if you're new, and easy to forget you know if you've been here a while.
